Human Being

How many times have you been asked “What do you do?”  One characteristic of American culture is that we value our “doing” rather than our “being”, what we do (external) rather than who we are (internal).  It is easy to derive our identity from Doing. We focus on keeping our lives full of activities, sports, kids, volunteer opportunities, career, social events, the list goes on. The down-side of a Human Doing, is that halfway through life we find ourselves tired, with a growing sense of restlessness, with a lack of joy and zest, and sometimes we’re not even sure why. Some people just keep busy, keep Doing, avoid being alone or quiet, as they prefer to just push forward and drown out the lack of peace. Even worse, some people get caught in addictions and unwanted habits as they are looking for relief, looking to find what is missing.

Some people stop and notice that something is not well. This is awakening and it is priceless! When you give yourself space to observe your thoughts, feelings, and behaviors and to question your actions, you create the powerful opportunity to become aware of what is hidden under layers of busy-ness, stress, obligations, “doing” without “being”.  When you are aware, you are then able to choose!

When you do NOT take time to know yourself as a “being”, your actions/lifestyle/behaviors often stem from a place of inauthenticity. This means that you make choices based on what you believe is socially acceptable, what will bring you love from others, what will protect you from failure, what might make other people happy. These choices are not authentic to who YOU are. The activities will keep you busy, pleasing others, responding robotically as actions without purpose do, and will ultimately lead to the restlessness and emptiness described above.

When you take the time to become aware of what you really want, who you really are, what would make you come alive, you can then align your actions and “doing” to be authentic to you! Life will become rich and full of meaning as you begin to take actions from a place of authenticity! You are a human BEING first, and the sooner you honor that the more joy you will discover and bring to others as well.

“Don’t ask what the world needs.

Ask what makes you come alive, and go do it.

Because what the world needs is people who have come alive!”
